The Role of Morphology of the Thumb in Anthropomorphic Grasping: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
The unique musculoskeletal structure of the human hand brings in wider dexterous capabilities to grasp and manipulate a repertoire of objects than the non-human primates. It has been widely accepted that the orientation and the position of the thumb plays an important role in this characteristic behavior. There have been numerous attempts to develop anthropomorphic robotic hands with varying levels of success. Nevertheless, manipulation ability in those hands is to be ameliorated even though they can grasp objects successfully. An appropriate model of the thumb is important to manipulate the objects against the fingers and to maintain the stability. Modeling these complex interactions about the mechanical axes of the joints and how to incorporate these joints in robotic thumbs is a challenging task. This article presents a review of the biomechanics of the human thumb and the robotic thumb designs to identify opportunities for future anthropomorphic robotic hands.

Unknown Object Grasping Strategy Imitating Human Grasping Reflex for Anthropomorphic Robot Hand
This paper presents a strategy meant to allow anthropomorphic robot hands to grasp objects of unknown shape in imitation of the human grasping reflex. A 10-month-old baby may bend his/her thumb and four fingers in an attempt to grasp an object when it comes in contact with the palm. After grasping it, if the object is attempted to be removed from the baby’s hand, the baby holds the object more ...
متن کاملGrasping of Unknown Object Imitating Human Grasping Reflex
This paper presents a grasping strategy of unknown objects imitating human grasping reflex for anthropomorphic robot hands. In the proposed grasping, each joint of the thumb and the fingers is controlled independently using the contact force affecting its adjacent fingertip side link. By setting a suitable contact force, both fingertip grasping and enveloped grasping with uniform grasping force...
متن کاملFirst Carpometacarpal Joint Dislocation and Review of Literatures
Dislocation of the first carpometacarpal (CMC) is a rare occurrence. Treatment of this dislocation varies from closed reduction and casting to ligament repair. Neglected dislocation or incomplete reduction of the 1st CMC cause chronic instability and painful arthritis, muscle imbalance and decreased grip force. In our study 6 patients is evaluated that were visited in less than 24 hours from ...
متن کاملFanconi Anemia Concurrent with an Unusual Thumb Polydactyly: A Case Report
This case report presents a case of Fanconi’s Anemia with an unusual thumb polydactyly in a 2-year old boy. The extra thumb had no nail, nail bed and distal phalanx. The extra thumb had no active motion. The duplication of the thumb occurred at the carpometacarpal joint but its morphology did not match with any classification described for thumb polydactyly. Although his thumb polydactyly was ...
متن کاملComparison of Custom-made Versus Prefabricated Thumb Splinting for Carpometacarpal Arthrosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Background: The goal of this study was to compare the two types of orthoses, prefabricated soft splints versus shortthermoplastic custom-made splints, that are the most commonly used for the management of first carpometacarpal(CMC) osteoarthritis (OA).Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review in the literature based on the Preferred ReportingItems for Systematic Reviews and Me...
